The dispatch · Tuesday

Happy Tuesday, neighbor.

November 3 – 9, 2026

First, the civic stuff: today is Election Day. Polls in Connecticut are open 6 AM to 8 PM. If you’re not sure where you vote, check your polling place before you head out, and if you’re in line by 8, you vote.

Then it’s a big Saturday. The Norwalk Public Library throws its 10th annual Norwalk Author Celebration, NHRL’s fighting robots tear into each other on Water Street, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking auctions off a season of prints at Monothon. Also on deck: the Farmers Market and a Poets & Writers Night Wednesday, Always…Patsy Cline opening at MTC Friday, the American Chamber Orchestra season opener Saturday night, and a Sunday talk on painter John Trumbull at Lockwood-Mathews.

The featured pick · Saturday, November 7, 10 AM to 4 PM, the Norwalk Public Library hosts its 10th annual Norwalk Author Celebration on Belden Ave.

Colored vintage postcard of the Norwalk Public Library's 1903 building on Belden Avenue, ca. 1905, with a handwritten note along the bottom

Archive image, not this week’s festival: a Detroit Publishing Co. postcard from the Norwalk Public Library collection (PastPerfect, PC 13).

The main library on Belden Ave turns ten years of hometown writing into one long Saturday. The 10th annual Norwalk Author Celebration runs 10 AM to 4 PM, and the Connecticut Book Festivals listing puts the lineup at about 70 Connecticut authors: children’s books, poetry, nonfiction and plenty in between.

Come for the table-hopping. Meet the people who wrote the books, talk shop, get a copy signed, and find your next read from someone who lives a few towns over, or down the block. Children’s authors are in the mix, so bring the kids, and bring a tote bag. You’ll want it.

Shuck yeah · a fact from the harbor
“Over to see Jennie’s baby”

The postcard up top did its job long before it landed in an archive. Around 1905, the Detroit Publishing Co. printed this view of the library’s then-new building on Belden Ave, built in 1903. Somebody named Ada bought one, scribbled “Over to see Jennie’s baby, she has a nice little boy” across the bottom, and mailed it to a Miss Alice McTaney in Hoboken, N.J. The postmark is illegible, so nobody knows the week. The card came home anyway: it now sits in the Norwalk Public Library’s own collection as catalog number PC 13. The library kept its own postcard. That’s a local author move.
