The dispatch · Tuesday
Happy Tuesday, neighbor.
October 20 – 26, 2026
First, the civic stuff: early voting is open. Norwalk voters can cast a ballot at City Hall, 125 East Ave, 10 AM to 6 PM every day, weekends included, through Sunday, November 1, with extended hours of 8 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, Oct 27 and Thursday, Oct 29. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
Now, spooky season gets a history lesson. Tonight the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion hosts Grave Objections, a lecture on the century-long trade in stolen corpses, and across town the city holds a Boards and Commissions open house for anyone curious about serving. Also on deck: the Farmers Market and a trivia fundraiser at 314 on Wednesday, Baby and Me at Beth El Thursday, Flower Fridays, the Halloween Nightfair on Washington Street and the Norwalk Symphony’s Tchaikovsky Festival Saturday, and a card show Sunday. Plus, this week’s Pearl: Oyster Sessions, a free cowork and happy hour at Spacecat on Wednesday.

For more than a hundred years, medical schools needed cadavers and the law didn’t supply nearly enough. So professional “ghouls” dug up fresh graves and sold what they found. Tonight in the Rotunda of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, James Henry, a New York City tour guide and nine-year docent at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, walks through the trade: who got targeted, how families fought back, and the 1788 “Doctors’ Riot” it set off in New York. Light refreshments follow. Tickets are on the museum’s Eventbrite page; call (203) 838-9799 with questions.

A forty-room chateau that almost didn’t make it
The mansion was a hard sell before it was a landmark. Banker LeGrand Lockwood built it between 1864 and 1868 to a design by Detlef Lienau, took a beating in the 1869 financial panic, and died in 1872. The Mathews family bought it in 1876, the city took over the grounds as a park in 1941, and in 1959 there were plans to knock it down for a new city hall. It survived. The ca. 1978 postcard up top still reads “Under restoration.” Not bad for a house that now spends October telling ghost stories.
